Children make excellent photography subjects but come with unique challenges. Some children will naturally play up to the camera, while others will take longer to warm up. Children who are hesitant may be won over by being allowed to look through the viewfinder and take a picture themselves. Digital cameras with a fast shutter speed make it easy to get quick shots and eliminate the worry over wasting film, but photographers using film can start with an empty camera to get the child used to the sound before inserting it. Many children have trouble sitting still for extended periods of time and may respond better to a spontaneous candid session then a formal portrait sitting. When photographing children outdoors, it is often best let them run around for a while and capture them when they stop to rest. A perfect smile isn't always a prerequisite for the best children's photos. Many photographers like to capture the child as they are in the moment and get down on their level for a different perspective. Although children can be a challenge to photograph, the results can be very rewarding, and a few simple guidelines can help achieve photographs that will be loved and treasured for years to come!
